Kill the Noise is an amazing producer/remixer/dj that will be gracing our fair city in a few weeks thanks to fubar. He also happens to be the man behind the amazing mashup project, ludachrist. Check out this amazing video of a live ludachrist concert featuring a dancing spongebob and barney!

Over breakfast CNN is screaming out that we have just had the biggest single point loss in DOW history after the house blocks the bailout deal. The day is not over yet but so far we have surpassed 9/11 in market hesitancy. Over the television dance music blares, the siren horns of Barletta, the “Wow’s” of Crookers and a new Jay-Z refrain we are about to all get used to. This is a scary moment to watch unfold but truthfully one we should have seen coming for quite some time. Our standard of living is becoming unsustainable, the debt bubble is bursting. Life continues, we still love what we care about and today, for me, that is the music.

Seattle Does Not Suck (This Time)

At about 5 PM on Friday I decided I wanted to go see Deadmau5 in Seattle. I had known about the show for sometime but had brushed off the idea originally and it has taken a week or two to really sink in that I have free time now. Spontaneous adventures are always the best so I called up Diego, Sean and Koolaid and we piled into the car two hours later.

We were deathly afraid we would arrive late, the Decibel festival was supposed to be popping and Deadmau5 is the sort of name that sells out clubs quickly. Luckily we quickly found the venue and got inside where it was indeed incredibly packed, a good mix of hipsters and bro’s with little pockets of burners. Not much dancing at first and almost no one was drinking so we assumed that everyone was just waiting for their tabs to kick in.

Santiago & Bushido were effortless and clean but seemed a little generic to me, buildups cut short and the basic progressive house the crowd expected. The dancing still seemed to be a minimum with small pockets (like us four crazy boys) but the mood was rising.

Deadmau5 is a rockstar. Bursting onto the stage with his giant blue mouse head, the crowd whipped itself into a frenzy, an impressive feat since the first half of Deadmau5’s set was fairly slow and boring. The outfit gives him that little boost, something fun and silly we can latch onto and appreciate. It is also features light up eyes (sound activated) and no headphones, making the songs he dropped in character that much more impressive.

The second half of the set was much better, extremely technical and building, this little twenty two year old hammering out beautiful notes on a ten by ten midi controller, dropping his Daft Punk remix into the middle of The Reward is Cheese to a now dancing crowd.
I randomly met this amazingly awesome guy from Seattle who rode with us to the after party (I have no pictures of this, we were pretty toasted by this time) and let us stay his house in the U district.
What impressed us most about this individual was how open and friendly, generous and trusting he was to four strangers. He also had this insane DJ set up in his basement, two CDJ 1000’s hooked up to two serato equipped turntables, with both of the mixers hooked up to a third mixer going through Abelton.

We slept for an hour or two at most and took off early in the morning to avoid freaking out the guys roomates who we had never met. A few hours adventuring around Seattle early on a Saturday morning and we all hauled our tired asses to home.

Duke Dumont

Duke Dumont is one of the most anticipated producers and DJ’s in the fidget house/ghetto house scene. As the major electronic albums keep flopping this year (Goldfrapp, Miss Kittin, Underworld) the young up and comers hold all the eyes. But even the hot young talents are still a somewhat questionable force with a only a handful of remixes and solo tracks released. The wait is antagonizing, we want Kissy Sell Out’s full length! We want Duke Dumont’s, Sinden’s, Fake Blood’s actual albums!

For now here are some hot to trot songs:

Hoy!- Duke Dumont Extremely rhythmic & building with a nice sample of an Indian trumpet over African sounding drums.

Feltham (The Borstal Beat) with it’s strangely catchy melody of an english girl talking over over a soccer anthem that turns very bassline.

Run It- EPMD (Duke Dumont Remix) Well done, “normal” hip hop with a bit of a boost from the Duke.

Mystery Jets- Two Doors Down (Duke Dumont Deconstruction) If you need proof that electro artists can be interesting and deeper then a banging beat here is a little bit of emotional build up and some extreme versatility.

Gang Of Four Remix

Remember Gang of Four? The highly influential rock band that birthed the bass line backbones of Disco Punk and opened the stage for The Rapture and Interpol? This is a band the record collectors tell you to listen to and the disc jockeys sneak onto the airwaves.
Here is a new take on an oft overlooked classic, the raw muscular rattling beat, the familiar blaring melody. “Sweats running down your back, sweats running down your neck, your kiss so sweat, your sweat so sour.” And then the hard sharper bass line kicks in to remind you this version belongs in this day and age.

Heavy Metal in Baghdad

I was able to check this movie out from the multnomah county library, and I am totally impressed by this films ability to entertain me with the story of the only heavy metal band to ever exist in Iraq (and other nearby arab countries) while also telling a very personal story of the day-to-day lives of civilians in war-torn Iraq.

Here’s the official summary:

Heavy Metal in Baghdad is a feature film documentary that follows the Iraqi heavy metal band Acrassicauda from the fall of Saddam Hussein in 2003 to the present day. Playing heavy metal in a Muslim country has always been a difficult (if not impossible) proposition but after Saddam’s regime was toppled, there was a brief moment for the band in which real freedom seemed possible. That hope was quickly dashed as their country fell into a bloody insurgency. From 2004-2007, Iraq disintegrated around them while Acrassicauda struggled to stay together and stay alive, always refusing to let their heavy metal dreams die. Their story echoes the unspoken hopes of an entire generation of young Iraqis.

Church makes soft beautiful music that pulsates, drones and spikes into soft crescendo. They quote Kraftwerk and The Beach Boys as major influences and I almost wish they had an animal name as to me they sound like the offspring of Fleet Foxes and Panda Bear. It’s rare that a non dance act really catches my attention these day but this was the perfect addition to my morning. They play a show October 24th at Kellys Olympian to release a CD and you should probably be there.

After Kissy Sell Out dropped Player Player’s “Lonely” in a podcast bloggers everywhere spread the love and this hype was translated into a loving Pitchfork review for Player Player’s take on “Mars”. Expect to see these songs popping up in your local club as these two cats have already played along side The Crookers, The Klaxons and Erol Alkan making it likely the US will finally take notice.
