DEADMAU5 VS MELLEFRESH_SEX SLAVE _PER QX MIX_

I love the vocal sample. And the big room work that Per Qx has been doing lately pays off in saving the always borderline vapidity of Deadmau5’s originals.

When I was a very young kid listening to No Doubt’s Tragic Kingdom in my room, I would often wonder why it is that certain tracks were played on the radio, and others were album only.  As I grew up, learned about economics, and became a giant hip-hop fan, I’ve begun to understand that radio play isn’t necessarily an indication of quality.  Some tracks are just too strange to be played on the radio.  It’s why ‘Cousinz’ surely gets play while the fantastic ‘Baby Birch’ probably never will.

Rafter – Paper

One of my favorite labels specializing in this stranger stuff has been Asthmatic Kitty.  From Helado Negro to Cryptacize, the pop music this label produces is among the most bizarre, and among the best.  And maybe that’s why this new Rafter record is so immediately striking.  It isn’t weird at all.  Not even lyrically: “I need paper, yes I do, to keep my thoughts from blowing away.” That sentiment is repeated constantly throughout the song, and after thinking about it a minute I can’t help but feel like, “Thank god he found some!”

Papers is from Rafter’s upcoming Animal Feelings, which comes out April 13 on Asthmatic Kitty.

For many of us, March is a particularly troubling time.  For one, we have to cope with the inevitable: we are simply too busy to go to SXSW.  After SXSW, we’re still too busy, and too poor, to make Coachella. Some of us may, even still, be coming to terms with having to miss Sasquatch as well. For us this means either going to as many individual shows as possible, or simply waiting until September to hit MusicFestNW (& Bumbershoot if we’re lucky!).  The point is, hundreds and hundreds of bands, from all genres converge to play these events, and hundreds & hundreds of us simply cannot go.

So, hopefully by now you’ve come to terms with this; if you have, you’ve likely began to embrace the events you CAN attend.  One such event is going to occur very soon: Raw Magic.  For those aforementioned folk (read: myself), we are in some luck.  The variety of bands, coupled with the intensity of simply seeing so much music for so much time, is something we seldom get to experience here in the NW.  Raw Magic seeks to challenge that commonality for the first weekend of March.  We’ll get noise with a brief noise parade occuring shortly before the first set (which is a double set by both wilder & Mayo).  Following this we’ll get Portland power-pop via our own Mean Jeans.  After this we’ll be doused with a ‘wave’ of summer from the stunning Best coast.  If this isn’t enough variety for you, you haven’t made it far enough.  Following all of this is an all vinyl attack by the DJ’s making up Los Angeles’ Dublab, who promise to keep you dancing well into the next day.

But that isn’t all.  The event is not only open to the public, but anyone (21+ of course) willing to dish out ten bucks can also join in the beer garden.

But that’s just Friday.  If you’re too broke to make it out for that, you’ve always got Saturday – another all evening (well into the next day) affair with Dublab Tonalism, also featuring performances by Jimmy Tamborello (DJ (AKA DNTEL!)), Grouper, and many more.

So yes, missing out can be the pits, but when the show comes to you, you’re the only one to blame for missing out.
