Fav mix of the week – DJ Godfather – PromoBassMix2007

This shit is hyper fast, and features the best ghettotech turntablist action i’ve heard, except of course what you’ll hear at the upcoming DJ Assault show this upcoming friday at Branx.  (plug plug plug!)

No, seriously, DJ Godfather’s skills are hella good. DJ Godfather (Brian Jeffries) comes from Detroit Michigan, and thus was one of my main influences, growing up in the region.  I highly recommend buying one of his mixtapes in the “da bomb” series.

He is the co-owner of the Twilight 76 Records label with sublabels like: Databass Records, Juke Trax, and D.E.T. Only; these labels pioneered Ghettotech and made it famous outside Detroit.

Stop Requesting Me #1: A Severe Reaction

Last month I got really really tired of all the mediocre bands on Myspace who tried to solicit themselves to me, despite not having even the remotest similarities in mutual tastes.  In hopes to have some fun, deflect the spammiest of friend requests, and encourage bands to not waste my time — and really consider whether or not I would be interested — I announced on FBM and my own Myspace that I would be reviewing the songs and profiles of any Myspace Music page that I got a ‘friend request’ from.

A Severe Reaction is the first band since I wrote about the idea to pop up in my inbox.  I was sort of pleased at how the content of A Severe Reaction’s page seemed it would lend itself to my ‘Stop Requesting Me’ campaign. They have a one posted song, “FuckinMove,” a logo, and band photos ’shopped to fly the neons de rigueur for current hip things.

Bling It On

Sat. May 30th at Crush(14th and Morrison)
starting at 10pm-

dress theme: shimmer, glisten, and glow

Not sure what Quillan will be spinning, but Ravi and I will be dropping some major bass, particularly of the booty shaking variety. I’ll be focusing on music which has very little redeeming value, focusing instead on catchy basslines, dirty electro beeps, and lots of sexually explicit lyrics (DJ Funk, DJ Godfather, 2 live crew, 95 south, tag team, dj assault, dj deeon, etc.)

To get psyched for this party, I’ve also made a promotional mini-mix of some new school renditions of old school jams. There’s probably 40 different tracks sampled into only 30 minutes, and yeah, I had to drop some 69 Boyz at the end, when was the last time you heard “tootsie roll.” To download :
