Some of you may have heard me drop the Chubby Finger track “Big John” in more then a few house sets, usually after the epic of build of “I Retro” by DJ Dero. With that little exposure to the one track I was very pleased to find a new Chubby jam in my inbox this morning. Keeping it fresh for 2009 with the disco turning a bit bassline/electro, this seems to be the current trend. Be sure to check their blog and cop the Swaggalicious mixtape. No I am not kidding.

An avid reader may have noticed the new Fake Blood remix of Hot Chip is listed in the tracklisting for the NYE Jack Beats mix. For some this is not terribly exciting, one more remix of dependable indy pop by dependable blog house. For others this is the high point of the week as there are certain names you search for over and over again, waiting for a new remix to come out. Some of the hottest artists in the world have only released five mp3’s but get blogged about constantly and feverishly.
Hot Chip- Touch Too Much (Fake Blood Remix)

Fake Blood is one of these names. And like most of the prolific producers and DJ’s there are a lot of other names involved. Theo Keating in the man behind the music but you may remember him from his slight commercial success as one half of The Wiseguys an eclectic British hiphop duo that released two songs as commercials for Mitsubishi and Budweiser. Quickly forgotten but worth listening to, especially for any Fatboy Slim/Big Beat fans still left.

A few years later and Touché might catch your eye as his DJ name, most famous in the new electro-blog stratosphere for the remix of Kissy Sell Out’s “Her”.

By 2006 we are in the middle of a boom in dance music and as the big names prove themselves to be “groups” like Justice, SMD and Soulwax many a fan expected the newly created supergroup in The Black Ghosts to rise to the top. Here we have Theo rejoining Simon Lord who he had worked with in The Wiseguys and later as Simian, before Simian reforms itself into Simian Mobile Disco.

Despite critical acclaim and a very decent album The Black Ghosts never catch on fire and become a staple in American Apparel soundtracks or coffee shop background noise, it is just more emotional and indy dance music- think Digitalism as compared to Justice. There is more there, but we can safely assume the public wants less.

This brings us up to the current day and creates a precedent for my respect for Theo Keating. After all this he tops himself, comes up with a new moniker, courts some of the top indy and dance bands around (Everything from The Kills to Scroobius Pip- for more on that click here) and generally introduces his version of the fidget sound to dance floors everywhere. The one released Fake Blood produced song has also been met with a wall of success, being remixed and mashed up like an instant classic.
