As y’all may know, you diligent FBM readers, my role here in the site is not to hype the latest cutting edge music.  Mostly, I’m the admin.  When I post something, it’s normally because it really tickles my fancy.

Since I love all things electrocrunkified, I’m a big fan of the blog whitefolksgetcrunk.com.  I was listening to DJ Real Juicy’s latest mix, Electro Thuggin’.  It’s not mixed amazingly, but it sure introduced me to some rap remixes I haven’t come across before.  Like this awesome mashup by, Brooklyn’s DJ Morsy of the DJ collective NANA CHILL. I had to hit him up for it since it doesn’t come easily through your normal internet search.  He just asks that I “should help support and purchase my latest CD at http://www. turntablelab. com/cds/0/0/60822. html”

He takes a really enjoyable instrument track by London’s electronica/funk/punk  band Spektrum, and adds some acappella’s by Dj Unk, which is a vast improvement on the otherwise boring beats the original has.  If you like the instrumental, but would prefer yourself some Elton John, check out the mash up by Dunproofin, which I used a year ago in my 80s remix mix tape “Retrofitted”.

So this weekend La Riots are gonna be at Rotture. La Riots are part of the Fools Gold family, ya know that little record lable founded by DJs A-Trak and Nick Catchdubs. These guys are huge and this is one of many awesome shows to be coming to our little corner of the globe. So get your ass off the couch and come support the electro scene, cause if you do more ill shit will come our way. In the words of Warrior Quess, “Big ups to da premota on dis one, and big ups to yourself.”

DeafChild
DeafChild aka Ian M..has been in the industry of eating bacon now for 25 long greasy years. His work has been featured on the grills and stoves of some of the hottest names in breakfast. Never one to stay confined to a genre or be pigeonholed by expectations, this maverick has been redefining the idea of breakfast meat since birth. He’s piled on the pig with some of the best in the world: Carl “the dirty glove” Wickstrom, Quillian, Devo, Mattie 2000, The Axis, GorillaDust, and K Wheetman just to name a few. With some heavy drinking and bad decisions already in the works for 2009 its looking like a
promising year for this peppercrusted connoisseur.

Lady Adie
Lady Adie is quickly becoming a popular draw in the downtown club scene, gaining several current residencies- at Dante’s, Pala, Hecklewood and Crown Room among others. Her sound is similar to blog house, nu rave/nu disco or indie dance though she is known to vary it up with everything from hip-hop to drum and bass. Outside of DJing this 27 year old is pursing a Ph.D. in neuroscience but is quickly becoming a full time and very popular DJ.

DJ Gray

For 6 years now, DJ Gray has been playing everything from burning man parties to the naked bike ride with his recent accomplishments being topped by him opening for Ladytron over the midnight hour at 2410 on New Years Eve. His style ranges from dirty hip hop to electrohouse with the occasional taste of booty and ghettotech. His sets are always based upon the audience and dancefloor reactions. He has residencies at Branx and Pine Street Lounge.

DJ Countzero
Along with Gray, DJ Countzero runs the website fuckbadmusic.com , a successful music blog based here in Portland Oregon. Musically Countzero plays hard electro and fidget house, often playing the newest tracks released on the blog.

Winter here in Portland has been incredibly snowy and cold the past few weeks, much like the country of Bulgaria, where Ladytron’s vocalist Mira Aroyo is from.  Lucky for me, I get the honor of opening for them at the epic 2410 New Year’s party tonight.  I felt that Ladytron’s music has been quite appropriate for the winter, dark yet upbeat.

I’m not a big fan of their latest single “Runaway” from their latest album Velocifero, which they produced themselves.  However, some of the remixes are downright awesome.  So I’ve decided to post every single remix I could find and let you decide that for yourself.  They appear in the order of which I think are the best to my least favorite.  The music video is awesome though.

Hot Whiskey Toddy

• 1 cube sugar
• 2 ounces bourbon, rye, Scotch, Canadian, or blended whiskey
• Slice lemon
• Nutmeg

Put sugar in a mug or small tumbler and add enough water to dissolve. Add the whiskey, fill with boiling water and stir. Garnish with slice of lemon and grate a little nutmeg on top.

Cabin Fever

DJ Ravi of Portland (not to be confused with the Indian wedding DJ Ravi), just sent me two tracks.  Ravi has been one of my favorite DJs here in Portland, to work with, and also to see perform.  Along with Beyonda, he’s one of the best multi-genre DJs around this town, able to seamlessly move from old skool hip hop to house beats.  Even his all-higher-dance-tempo sets include turntablist action.  He also the only dj in PDX (besides myself, as far as I know) that REALLY likes Miami Booty Bass.

Nowadays, I don’t see him perform too much because he’s busy managing the stylish and semi-underground lounge club Pi-Rem.

This first track is a remix of “We got the beat” by the Go Go’s. The original always seems to be a hit at parties where people want to dance the 80s, and I believe that the remix is true enough to the original that one could slide this in to  mix it up just a little.  My only complaint is that it needs more bass.

The second track weighs in at 110bpm, and reminds me of a progressive house version of The Sweater by Meryn Cadell.  I like it, but I don’t believe the rhythm of the vocals on the chorus match up, and I preferred the vocalists spoken word to her singing.   [Don't hate me Ravi, I know thats your girlfriend]

When I first started DJing many years ago, the house parties I was doing never wanted to hear electronic, so I would blast mostly top 40 hip-hop party jams.  In my own bedroom however, I jammed to the more intelligent jazzy hip-hop sounds of Arrested Development, Black Sheep, Black Eyed Peas (before Elephunk), A Tribe Called Quest, and Digable Planets. You know, pre-2000 hip-hop.

I loved Digable Planets Grammy-winning 1993 debut album, Reachin’ (A New Refutation of Time and Space) since I could pick up on the samples from jazz/R&B greats like Art Blakey, Sonny Rollins, and Curtis Mayfield.  After the trio’s second release Blowout Comb, they separated to pursue their own projects (of which Ladybug Mecca’s work stands out the best, she even released some jams on Om Records!).  They reunited a decade later and promised the release of a third album in 2005, of which I’m still waiting to hear.

I do have the opportunity this week however to go here them live here in Portland with other great hometown hip-hop heroes Dj Rev. Shines and Nico Luminous.  Thank God it’s at the 2410 N Mississippi space and not the Roseland.
