The new sound of french Ghettotech

So though the booty sound has fallen out of disfavor here in the states to make way for the overpowering womp, ghetto style is alive and well and France thanks to several crews such as Bros Before Hoes and BootyCallJeanville, the man behind this mix, is one of my favorite because of his fast tempo, modern rap acappella is, manic techno, and his layering of vocal flows from Uffie to the classic Boom Boom Boom by the Outhere Brothers.

more tricks on how to save mp3s

Sometimes when playing tracks through hypemachine or soundcloud, I really want to be able to save a track to my hard drive for later play, and i become frustrated when I can’t find a way to do so legally. So here’s a technique that’ll get you tracks, generally at no greater than 128kpbs. This is an excerpt from an article on brighthub.com:

With just a little knowledge of how Firefox works with embedded video and music, it’s easy to locate your downloads in page properties or in the browser cache. Best of all, it can be done without using any Firefox browser plug-ins. This article shows you how.

SkipScreen – great helper for media downloaders

Since our hosting company got upset with us over some copywrite issues, we’ve been mostly posting tracks that are direct downloads hosted elsewhere.  However, once in a while, there is amazing music that we simply must share, and do so through a 3rd party free host like Rapidshare, Megaupload, Mediafire etc.  But this requires a lot of wasted time waiting for your link to appear as the sites force you to watch some advertisement, or simply make you wait as a means to encourage you to upgrade your account.

No more. Now that I’ve discovered SkipScreen.  SkipScreen is a free Firefox add-on that skips the clicking and waiting on sites like RapidShare, Megaupload, Mediafire, zShare, and more! Never download music without it.

Some neat things:

  • skips the Megaupload anti-captcha
  • Megaupload downloads now require zero intervention. Just open the tab and it works. They even have automatic reloads

Go directly to the SkipScreen.com to download it, since Mozilla won’t officially endorse an add-on that bypasses captchas.

The Phried Piper – a live mix by DJ Ravicher

I had the pleasure & honor of having DJ Ravicher play at my birthday celebration. David Ravicher, who’s hometown is Portland but now lives in Mt Shasta, made this mix somewhat as an attempt to win himself a spot playing at the infamous 2010 Winter Music Conference in Miami. So, if you like this mix, go to the originating page and vote for it by clicking the stars underneath the album cover.

A takedown notice – direct download unavailable at this time

So, our web host, where we store our mp3s, got a DMCA takedown notice from a UK record label regarding music in the Fuckbadmusic directory violating copyright restrictions. They removed all the data within the FBM directory. Which means all of our hosted music is unavailable at this time.

A lot of the music we post has been sent to us directly for promotion purposes, and so we do have permission to  post it, but it appears the host decided not to take any chances. Which means now I have to go through a year of posts and fix those links. Lame.

Sorry, we’ll get this fixed soon.  In the meantime, we’ll be back to using 3rd party hosting like MediaFire.

Party More, Work Less

I’m too lazy to write original material, so here’s something I read recently on Wired that resonated well. Interspersed are a random assortment of choice tracks.

Aquasky – have a good time [original mix]

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

In these rotten economic times, putting in long hours has become a popular strategy for boosting job security. And that’s really too bad.

sucka! If you rabidly focus on work, in the long run, you’ll be unhappy. Ran Kivetz, a professor of business at Columbia University, recently conducted a series of experiments that identified a paradox in our behavior: Doing the “right” thing—putting our responsibilities ahead of momentary pleasures—often leaves us unhappy down the road. When we skip a vacation to work overtime or pass up that awesome vintage Porsche for a used minivan—sure, we pat ourselves on the back for a week or two. But as the years go by, we invariably regret our monkishness and wish we’d enjoyed ourselves more.

Para One – Epiphanie Teaser (Surkin Megamixx) [Notecrusher edit]

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

The word for this is hyperopia: an excess of farsightedness. In a 2006 study, Kivetz asked respondents to think about a moment from the previous week when they had to choose between work and pleasure; then he asked them to rate how much they regretted their decision. The amount that people regretted either working or relaxing was pretty much equal. But then he asked a second group to think about a similar moment from five years earlier. This time, people’s regret over working was more than double the regret over playing.

Eric B & Rakim – I Know You Got Soul (Acen Remix)

Our future selves, it seems, will wish we’d been bigger hedonists. Why? Because while we think we’re planning for the future by being pragmatic, we forget we also want our lives to include lovely, dazzling moments of fun and not just the daily cubicle grind. “When you view your life from a broader lens,” Kivetz says, “there’s a focus on feeling you’ll miss out on the pleasures of life.”

BitchAssDarius_-_Ride

That’s also how to cure hyperopia: Think about how you’ll look back. In a study he published in last December’s Journal of Marketing Research—called “Remedying Hyperopia: The Effects of Self-Control Regret on Consumer Behavior”—Kivetz asked subjects to meditate on how much regret they had five years after they made a virtuous decision over an indulgent one. The subjects instantly became more self-indulgent: When they were offered a reward for participating in the research, almost all chose chocolates over cash.

BT – Smartbomb (Plump-Djs-Mix)

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Kivetz isn’t suggesting you stop acting like a reasonable adult. But the next time you’re wavering over whether to call in sick and join your friends on their impulsive three-day jaunt to Iceland, try this mind hack: Imagine yourself 10 years from now, looking back on your decision. What choice will make you feel happy then?

Chase & Status Minimix

holy shit, my mind is just absolutely blown away with how fast and furious Chase & Status have mixed so many new dubstep and drum & bass banger tracks into just five minutes. Yes, this Annie Mac Radio 1 mix isn’t something new, it’s over a year old, but it’s new to me, as I just got their amazing album, More Than a Lot.  I only wish that this didn’t end with their track “Pieces” since it reminds me of some crappy alternative rock band.

Akala – Shakespeare, now available in the USA

I actually wanted to buy this track, and attempted to do so through amazon.com, but they informed me that I wasn’t allowed to because of “geographical restrictions.” And it wasn’t anywhere in the blogosphere.   So i tracked down Akala’s album as a torrent, and I’m releasing his track Shakespeare since I’ve been obsessed with it since I heard it on the Scratch Pervert’s 2007 Mixtape “Watch the Ride.“   Using a loop from the first measure, I’ve been dropping this track in my sets as a way to transition from 70bpm hip hop into some high energy ghettotech.  The instrumental (plus 1 drum layer, and 1 floatey synth layer) is lifted directly from the 2004 international dance floor anthem, Loneliness by Tomcraft. Enjoy

Holy Shit, Deadmau5 will be in Portland

While checking out HypeMachine to see if there were any new Deadmau5 mashups, I noticed a new feature, which is a local concert feature. I went and bought 2 tickets immediately, especially since the first 100 folks to get tickets get a discount. the show is taking place on Wednesday, October 28, 2009 at 8:00 pm. and though I normally don’t like seeing events at the Roseland Theater, especially dance music acts (the Crystal Method show I recently went to was lame), I doubt Deadmau5 will be coming through town any time again.

Awesome Deadmau5 mashups:

Kraddy @ the 2410

Seriously, if you live in Portland, or even the west coast and are part of the the EDM scene and haven’t heard of the Glitch Mob yet, you are not going out enough.  and you can get the opportunity to catch the Glitch Mob live @ Rotture July 27th. But the vegan of the crew, Kraddy, won’t be there, cuz according to one source, he’s evidently  wants to go in a “different creative direction” using more “live instruments along with the electronics” which makes perfect sense since he knows guitar, bass, drums while mastering his piano technique.  so it’s real nice for him to come directly to Portland. I guarantee, the show will be off the hook, considering that it also serves as the after party for Dead Prez, which it is rumored may actually perform as well.

I have major props for this man since he offers free REMIX KITS on his website so you can take his tracks and tweak them to your delight.

Though I don’t think that it actually gets the reader any clue to what is music sounds like, I thought the bio on his webpage was so intriguing I’ve pulled the selection for those that like flowery flourishy poetic verse.

“Kraddy’s music implicates cybernetic breaks with asymmetrical dub delays and hip hop grooves with dark ethereal melodies. At times his music is technical and frenetic and calls to mind images of genetically mutated earthworms, poping and locking deep underground to sub atomic frequencies, causing minute shifts in the structure and alignment of the tectonic plates, that over millennia will alter the magnetic core of the planet and thus change its frequency field steering its evolution towards greater harmony and a more peaceful form.”

Or you can just listen to it below.

Here’s my favorite remix selections off his  his second album, “The Illegal Album” on his own label Refiner Records.

And then of course, there’s this track, which seemed to be the Burning Man anthem 0f 2006:

Theme Songs of Gray’s Life

These are my anthems lately.  They are on constant repeat on my zune.   I find them quite therapeutic.

I saw The Crystal Method “live” the other day.  Their concept of “live” is almost laughable.  When their computers glitched out, it became obvious how little they were actually constructing live versus pre-recorded.

Anonymous-i FOUR year anniversary party

I highly recommend going to this show. This local production group, Anon’ymous-I has been putting on some of the best epic & inclusive parties in Portland that I’ve been to.  Mark Farina is headlining with 2 sets. He’ll probably play a bunch from his latest album, Mushroom Jazz 6, which features some incredible trip-hop and downtempo beats. Co-headlining is Filastine. His work is an awesome spectacle of disparate sounds and international musical elements with the occasional drum beats provided by a shopping cart. He’s also got a new album, Dirt Bomb.  The shows supporting cast of local talent will please anyone with the diversity of musical styles being represented.

Unfortunately, this show is 21+, unlike many of Anon’ymous-I which have been more underage ravetastic.

It’s being thrown at 2410 N MISSISSIPPI Portland, OR 97212.

Here’s some gems I picked up through SoulSeek recently which I’m using as samples for some tracks that are in production.  I thought I’d share them with y’all, for your own sample usage, or simply as a reminder that, wow, thank god I wasn’t born in the 50’s.  And I know better that french kissing won’t get you pregnant.

Pulverturm – classic techno/trance anthem of my youth

For some reason, russians keep sending me remixes of this song.  I first got down to this anthem in an underground warehouse rave in Detroit back  in 1998.  This was Niels Van Gogh’s first track, and for what he’ll always be remebered by.  It hit gold in the peak of the rave days, hitting gold status in Belgium and having the honor of “Best selling vinyl record of the year 1998 in Germany!”  It’s always seemed like the perfect soundtrack song to be played at the end of Bladerunner, or some other mid 80’s sci fi film.

Later, Ultra Records tapped Eniac to remake it as Pulverturm 2.0 on a 15 remix album.

This year, Kosmo re-issued it as the Niels van Gogh vs. Eniac Pulverturm 3.0 Remixes.

Here’s some techno, & quasi-trance that should provide a nice break from the electro we normally serve up.

lollipops are from Venice – Kanye West vs the Bloody Beetroots – DJ Gray mashup

lollipop_cover

Here’s a new mashup I’ve been working on for the past couple of weeks.  I was very much inspired by The Hood Internet, but I found it impossible to DJ with the version found on thier third mix tape, so I made my own , which includes a couple more guest vocals by Kanye West and Trix, and I’m giving to you in a 320kpbs format.  Let me know what you think in the comments, and if you think you can make a better edit,  I’ve included the original instrumental and acappella elements (& video’s after the jump) for you to make your own mashup.
