Kid Sister @ Holocene 10/21/09

I’ve gotta ask… Where the hell was Portland at this Kid Sister show? Was it the Wednesday night? Was it the nearly $20+ price tag?

Whatever it was, the lack of folks in attendance inspired the promoters to section off the two main floors at Holocene for an all ages crowd, leaving the narrow bar the only place to hold a drink. Needless to say, this cut down a major chunk of the dancing that might have been done during Rude Dudes & Flosstrodamus’ set. Commendable effort by those guys though. It was almost depressing watching them attempt to hype a headliner in a relatively empty venue.

The shame is… I don’t even know how many underage folks there really ended up being. Did this help their cause, or hurt it? I’ll lean toward the latter based solely on the fact that Kid Sister took the stage before eleven that night. Maybe a restless performer, but more likely an admission of defeat by the promoters.

What resulted was an amazing set for a half-hearted crowd. Very little dancing, due to the time of her performance, as well as the inability to drink and watch simultaneously. Tremendous energy by Kid Sister as she slid through her most familiar songs, shortening up some, while blending others together. The few new songs she played offered a glimpse further into her debut; though the songs were very similar in sound and style. I guess it depends on your interest, but I’d say the length of her set justified the price of the ticket. When you consider the fact that all rap shows are considerably more expensive, the cost comes at less of a surprise.

Fact is though, if Kid Sister appeals to any big crowd, it’s those of us who have been used to catching Flosstrodamus for an 8-10 dollar ticket. Judging by how packed those shows can be, the promoters should take away a little lesson about pricing. I may not be the only one who loves Kid Sister, but I was among the few willing to pay $45 to take myself and a friend. I should add that I put Holocene on a golden pedestal of Portland Venues. It is, hands down, the best place to see a show. Unfortunately, Kid Sister was my friend’s first time being there; and needless to say, it didn’t quite live up to my hype.

“It is, hands down, the best place to see a show.”
What?! don’t get me wrong, holocene gets some of the best acts. But the floor layout is HORRIBLE. Giant cluster fuck of people trying to get in and people trying to get drinks. Just opening up a cash and beer only mini bar in the second room would help a lot. And the sound system is meh.

I would have been there despite the price tag and the jail bait, but i fucked up putting it in my calender, not nov 21st sadtrombone.com

As someone coming up in the Meow Meow/Solid State scene… i look forward to clusterfucks. The relative closeness to the acts, coupled with the small stage make it, in my opinion, the most conducive to breaking the artist/enthusiast plane. Unlike Rotture (Probably my runner up), the stage is small enough to encourage the artist projects toward the whole crowd, rather than a portion at a time. And, unlike places like Berbati’s you get the feeling that the people running the show are actually stoked on who’s preforming. It’s the small club mentality and layout, with the big name (for me) acts. Maybe perfect sound is a compromise, but hey… the world is a noisy place, one filled with way too many people in relatively small places.
