Bobby Birdman @ Rotture 8/6/09

I had forgotten this about Bobby Birdman, but the man loves to talk. He may not say anything in particular, or anything particularly interesting, but to him it seemingly doesn’t matter so long as he’s talking. Maybe it’s a nervous thing, or his way of reaffirming his ability to vocalize. Regardless, any Bobby Birdman show is likely to start with banter, and lucky for him the crowd at Rotture was all ears.

Its hard to imagine a person who would refuse his voice anyways. One so infectious and controlled is impossible to ignore, let alone dislike. It’s the reason his classics like ‘Victory at Sea’ and ‘I Will Come Again’, while abstract in their message, strike such a familiar cord. His voice has the ability to take any confusion or negativity and transform it into something positive, something calm. People often liken his music to YACHT’s, which I suppose is justified given the one man in all white aspect, but aesthetically they couldn’t be more different. While YACHT insists we have a good time with pop and dance, Bobby Birdman taps our subconscious with his unbeatable falsetto, reminding the listener that you don’t need high tempos to have fun. It certainly helps when he calls upon the audience to keep the beat in hums and claps, eschewing any possibility of halfheartedness. He truly is an entertainer, and to this day, still, one of the best I know.
