It’s been a week now since the beginning of this year’s SMMR BMMR, the appropriate time needed to wind down from such an exhausting event. Most of us probably didn’t catch the show from start to finish each day (yours truly included), but even in drifting in and out of the 40+bands playing, one is bound to become overwhelmed. There’s a certain lack of variety from band to band which can cripple those hoping to see it all, but I suspect that to those interested solely in punk rock and its subgenres, this last weekend was absolute paradise. There wasn’t a truly bad band to speak of, and even going into SMMR BMMR with no education on the bands themselves, you were bound to find a few to fall in love with.
For me these bands were Sic Alps, Eat Skull, Ganglians, Gestapo Khazi, Fergus & Geronimo, Christmas Island, White Fang and Personal and the Pizzas. I suspect had I made it to the early shows, and all of the evening shows, my list would be extensively larger. Thanks to those involved for an amazing weekend. We’ll spend the rest of the summer trying to match that intensity.
holy shit, my mind is just absolutely blown away with how fast and furious Chase & Status have mixed so many new dubstep and drum & bass banger tracks into just five minutes. Yes, this Annie Mac Radio 1 mix isn’t something new, it’s over a year old, but it’s new to me, as I just got their amazing album, More Than a Lot. I only wish that this didn’t end with their track “Pieces” since it reminds me of some crappy alternative rock band.

This year Cass McCombs released his latest album Catacombs to much deserved fanfare. The album is great, but allow me to be the first to say it’s no where near as good as his last few. Seemingly gone is his sense of experimentalism, traded for a poppier attitude in both music and meaning. Regardless, the man is a genius at what he does, and you will have the opportunity to witness that genius come September 1st at the Mcdonald Theater. Yes, he’s only opening for Band of Horses, but that only means you wont have to sit through their set just to get to his. Or, if it’s the crowd you’re concerned about check him out headlining at Mississippi Studios in Portland on the 7th. Either way, Oregon is granted two opportunitites to catch his set, which will hopefully be a blend of both classics and new favorites. Don’t miss out.
Brand New TIM GREEN mix from John Digweed’s Transitions Radio Show on KISS! Thanks to my boys with late-night renegades and dBz crew, he’ll be playing in Portland later tonight.

I actually wanted to buy this track, and attempted to do so through amazon.com, but they informed me that I wasn’t allowed to because of “geographical restrictions.” And it wasn’t anywhere in the blogosphere. So i tracked down Akala’s album as a torrent, and I’m releasing his track Shakespeare since I’ve been obsessed with it since I heard it on the Scratch Pervert’s 2007 Mixtape “Watch the Ride.“ Using a loop from the first measure, I’ve been dropping this track in my sets as a way to transition from 70bpm hip hop into some high energy ghettotech. The instrumental (plus 1 drum layer, and 1 floatey synth layer) is lifted directly from the 2004 international dance floor anthem, Loneliness by Tomcraft. Enjoy

The very confusingly titled SMMR BMMR festival is happening this weekend at Rotture, and I’m far from bummed. Boasting probably the most pretentious line-up of any festival this year, SMMR BMMR proves to be the hippest place on earth this coming weekend. Hip for a reason however, as the artists they’ve brought together for this year’s festival are some of the best in SMMR BMMR history. The more I look over the line-up, the more I find that excites me. In an effort to illustrate that excitement I’ve thrown together a short hand list of bands (with MP3s) that I cannot wait to see. It’s rare to get so many small acts together in this city, and this is one of many reasons SMMR BMMR is not to be missed! Read the rest of this entry »
I had forgotten this about Bobby Birdman, but the man loves to talk. He may not say anything in particular, or anything particularly interesting, but to him it seemingly doesn’t matter so long as he’s talking. Maybe it’s a nervous thing, or his way of reaffirming his ability to vocalize. Regardless, any Bobby Birdman show is likely to start with banter, and lucky for him the crowd at Rotture was all ears. MusicFest North West exists in a realm between two of the biggest city-wide festivals of the year. While Austin’s SXSW kicks the summer off with essentially every artist you could ever want to see playing multiple times, New York’s CMJ offers a similar set of shows across its vast city. MusicFest North West, while similar, has the benefit of falling between those two events, cherry-picking the best of both and presenting them similarly all across Portland. It is undoubtedly Portland’s most exciting festival, and for a number of reasons. Read the rest of this entry »
2009 marks the first year FuckBadMusic will branch out as far as Red Rocks, Colorado to bring you coverage of one of the most beautiful American summer festivals. Maybe this will become an annual thing for us. Maybe we’re going to hate it!? But with a line-up like the one Monolith is bolstering this year, the latter seems unlikely. One of the most amazing voices these ears have ever heard is performing tonight at Rotture. Bobby Birdman’s Heart Caves is my favorite example of judging an album by its art. I always saw that cover art at Ozone East (R.I.P.) and one day my curiosity got the best of me. Despite committing to all vinyl music purchases, I broke down and bought what would become one of my favorite albums of all time. I’ve had the pleasure of seeing Birdman many times since (Including on a yacht!), and every subtle element of r&b, and pure-pop from his records become the standout elements of his live show. The man is a genius, and you could learn a thing or two about excellent music by checking out his set tonight at Rotture.
THIS SHIT IS ONLY $5!??

When discussing the myriad contributors to Roberto Carlos Lange’s first album as Helado Negro, the press release reads, “Collectively all these people are Helado Negro but the group changes form with each new day.” Although each track on Helado Negro implies an entirely new idea, they too collectively become the message behind Helado Negro. And, despite their varied sound, they consistently encourage the same thing. Read the rest of this entry »
FBM is a blog written about all kinds of music. We often focus on small acts and DJs, promoting and loving what we consider to be the very best in Indy, Dubstep, House and far beyond. We are a collective of (currently) unpaid kids based out of Portland Oregon. We urge you to support this music and hence we will provide the the most accurate show listings and heads up on things to do in Portland.
This is all those things but more then anything else this is about community, about having as many authors contributing as much as possible and promoting all of our friends. I believe in politics as still being important and I believe in this generation still being relevant. Our culture is all we have.
Almost all of this music is sent to us by the creator and is entirely legal to download, if something slips through the cracks and you are the owner of a soundfile you wish removed, simply email us. Thank you.
