ten days in nyc- photoblog
travel blog part 2; stuck in Brooklyn

For reasons a little too complicated to fully explain I lost my passport just minutes before my plane to London was supposed to depart. After the initial shock and will shattering realization, I started calling people. Virgin Alantic, my girlfriend, my friend who I am staying with here in Brooklyn and passport offices that are closed until Tuesday due to a needless holiday. Things will work out despite being literally stuck in a smoggy, humid place where I can’t prove who I am. With that said (and the implied stress) I could never be happier.
I am always dehydrated here and am usually hungry. Between walking half miles at a time, drinking until four and meeting more new people then I can keep up with there is a toll on your body and spirit in NYC- locals call it “the hustle”, the rewarding but taxing exsperience of living in the greatest city on earth. A city where you can get anything you want at any time but must pay heavily for the privledge. Between sixteen hundred as decent rent for one or two people, packs of cigarettes at ten dollars and drinks that can reach 12$ at nice places you must always be running to keep up.
The reward is that you live or visit among some of the most motivated, multi ethnic and hip people I have ever seen. One night I am partying in the VIP at a mega club
where we were some of the only white people, the next Cosmo Baker tear a small bar up, the next it is live music under a huge art installation down a hallway behind a bar in Williamsburg. Everywhere I go people are genuinely excited to meet me and talk about their city (the pride is overwhelming) and the hipsters here take me back with their extreme positivity, a huge contrast to the cynical Portland I am used to. There is hope for technology here, hope for global trade and urban environments, a huge aspect of sexual politics and a constant visual extreme playing behind every street.

Benoit Pioulard @ Holocene this Sunday

For those of us not financially (ready/)able to get a Grizzly Bear ticket on time, fear not!! The wonderful Benoit Pioulard has recently moved to Portland (read: like a year ago) and is opening a show at Holocene this Sunday. While his album may not be as hyped or hyper as the new Grizzly Bear, he certainly shares their enthusiasm for sprawling soundscapes. Pioulard dosn’t make ambient music, but his use of repetition to inspire daze implies ambient tendencies. The hollow sounding vocals come across as whispers but with a more direct urgency in their poppy nature. This of course is very nicely complemented by the layers and layers of sound on a given Pioulard track. He may not have a whole band of talent to back him, but I’m convinced he has the ability to be as loud and quiet as any other band playing this Sunday. I guess we’ll see.
I encourage you to investigate his art both here and here.

Ticket Giveaway: Amanda Blank @ Rotture

Surely competing with Trina for the “Baddest Bitch” title, Amanda Blank is hitting up all the stops in support of her forthcoming debut album I Love You. Thankfully one of these stops includes Portland’s biggest little venue Branx, where Blank is scheduled to tear it up this Saturday. If you’ve ever seen Spank Rock, chances are Amanda was there grindin’ side-stage and acting as a sort of hype-woman. Now she gets the spotlight, and will likely make the most of it. Don’t sleep on this one!
Contest details, results from the last one and MP3’s after the jump.

Travel Blog- Part 1
NYC ( I will upload my pictures soon I hope)
I get off the plane with four hours of sleep and the curse of being six two still straining my neck. After some initial confusion I find the correct way to escape the giant JFK, the correct way to get a metro card and after a few mishaps- the correct way to get downtown.
My initial reactions of the subway is of awe- I love the huge roar of a train approaching, the feel of the wind and the smell, somewhere between motor oil and humanity. I love the way the train moves, sliding from side to side, blasting through dark tunnels speckled with bright blue and red lights and the quick glances of graffiti and the crumbling concrete.

Ponytail @ Holocene 5/10/09

For a ‘holiday’, and a Sunday, I was pretty pleased with the turnout at Ponytail this weekend. Holocene isn’t a hard place to fill, and this was proof that if there’s reason enough, people will make the effort to come out. Ponytail was much more than enough reason. Molly Seigel was in full form, doing her best zombie impression while shouting incoherent lyrics into the microphone. Prior to their set someone told me they had read Ponytail originally wanted to sound like Lightning Bolt. With this in mind, the similarities were impossible to avoid. While drummer Jeremy Hyman may not have the chops like Brian Chippendale, or the charisma, he comes off as more of a Boredoms like beat instigator which serves to propel the very Lightning Bolt-like guitar work by Ken Seeno.

Heads Up: Ponytail
[Not my photo.]

If you haven’t already seen Molly Siegel on stage singing for Ponytail, you now have unbreakable plans this Sunday. As childlike and chaotic as their album cover suggests, Ponytail are one of the most fun female-fronted bands to ever take the stage. I had the good fortune of catching them open for Battles on their Mirrored tour, and they were simply amazing. The way Siegel bounces and screams suggest a sense of urgency, but really it’s just her inner child bursting through her adult exterior. Remember when you were little and all you could think to do was scream, jump and shake with excitement and frustration? Neither do I really, but lucky for us Ponytail does, and their set to remind us all this Sunday when they play Holocene with Katy Davidson and Tests.
