Splitting the Difference

Gavin Burrows is a producer and DJ from Derby in Northern England. His tracks will fit nicely into any and all playlists that bridge the gap between tech-house and the world of fidget and bangers (click on the image above to visit his myspace page where you can download two of his mixes, both of which vindicate the above claim). While he cites Justice, Daft Punk, and many other usual suspects amongst his influences, these tracks are distinctive insofar as they lean more towards the traditional house side of the sonic spectrum (and towards the techy side of that spectrum as well). He already has a number of tracks and remixes released, however, the tracks posted below are still being shopped around for release as The Eagle Has Landed EP. He is presently planning a U.S. tour for the upcoming summer, so keep your eyes peeled.

You’ll often hear words like ‘Haunting’ and ‘Reminiscent’ when hearing about the new Castanets album City Of Refuge. What with all the echo and reinterpretation that probably wouldn’t be the worse way to describe it. Nothing is more ‘Haunting’ or ‘Reminiscent’ however, than watching Ray Raposa preform live. As anyone who saw him on tour in support of his fabulous In The Vines will tell you, there is no folk show more freaky, no dirges quite so dim. Don’t assume he’ll be performing alone though. While he will undoubtedly spend most of the time facing a wall hunched over his guitar and effects, the very pretty voiced Annie Palmer will be doing double duty on bass and banjo (as well as some singing), and intriguing Yoni Kifle (from the last tour!) will be drumming and bassing as well.

Castanets – Good Friend, Yr Hunger
Castanets – This Is The Early Game
Castanets – Sway

This is all of course without mentioning the headliner: Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson. But you already know how I feel about him.

Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson – Buriedfed

Choice cuts of the moment.

Finally a remix of this song that can fit in a dance set! As songs become less and less off limits to remixes and edits we are starting to get our hands on glam rock classics.
Mobin Master & Hess Glitter Bomb (Bootleg)

More Deadmau5, a bit slower and pretty and somewhat hard to find. Add to your collection or start a new obsession.
Deadmau5- Clockwork (Original Mix)

I have always been so-so on the Twelves but this remix found my ear with a nice happy disco feel that stays subtle.

Low Budget

I am pleased to announce Low Budget will be headlining the next FBM party on November 22nd, upstairs at Rotture. You may have first heard Low B when he helped created the absolutely top notch mixtapes know as Hollertronix with Diplo. Or maybe it was the Aaron Lacrate and Low Budget B-More gutter jams (check back to my interview with Lacrate) that turned you onto his style, or maybe it was his work touring with and opening for Spankrock, the Clipse, A-trak, Tommy Sunshine, DJ AM and holding it down as M.I.A.’s tour DJ. Or maybe this is your first exposure to Low Budget. In which case we have a treat for you.

We Bout Our Money Vs Sweet Dreams – David Banner And Lil Flip Vs Eurythmics
Snoop VS Cure

Dance My Pain Away
Here is a rather older mix, but a classic.

in case you didn’t know Jokers of the Scene – tons o mixes

At our show Friday, we were really excited to announce that we’d booked Jokers of the Scene to play in November.  But then a whole bunch of stuff happened, and that’s not going to happen.  But if you don’t already know about them, you really should.

JOKERS OF THE SCENE are from Ottawa Canada, and are on Fool’s Gold, djs A-Track and Nick Catchdubs label .  They’ve being putting out some amazing remixes, and a few of their own original tracks as well.  I’d classify them in the fidget genre, though they’ve also got some epic electrotech productions, and their remix of SLUTT’s “Stop Copying Me” is pure brash noise. I played it last friday, and everyone hated me :)

New (Pop) Music of Note

It is the most fitting combination and somehow I did not see it coming, Treasure Fingers and Chromeo!
Glossy sleaze meets glossy sleaze in a single I would qualify more as a cover then a remix. Almost identical song structure with the signature Dave 1 voice. Can we expect this to be a future tour lineup?
Treasure Fingers- Cross the Dance Floor (Chromeo Remix)

Coachella always pulls out pop groups from the eighties to reunite and everyone always goes from absolutely no care for the group to full fledged hysteria, often without even remembering the words to the songs. The only problem with this is that the world is running out of bands to reunite. This is why I am guessing Duran Duran may be gracing our favorite hundred degree stage soon.
So here is a song to get reunited with, now with a nice little electro kick courtesy of 33HZ.
Duran Duran- Tempted (33 HZ Remix)

I am not very impressed by the new Britney single but I could not help from posting it due to an amazingly named remix by electronic legend Tommie Sunshine.
Britney Spears-Womanizer (Tommie Sunshine’s ‘Holy Shit, The Economy Is Fucked’ Re-Rub)

MGMT has been ruling the blog world due to college students loving indy music and the fact that Justice did a remix. Also this is one of those strange occasions where the public seems perfectly fine with two great singles and the rest of the album being mediocre. Well make that three hits thanks to DFA’s highly dependable Holy Ghost! taking this and turning it more Hot Chip then Peter Bjorn and John.
Of Moons, Birds & Monsters (Holy Ghost! Remix)

Heartbreak Interview

Heartbreak is a charming duo from London who play Italo /Electro. They were charming because they were both super nice, rocked out some crazy stage antics and were almost impossible to understand with thick accents. They opened for Cut Copy and The Presets on Tuesday. I scribble out this interview in a ten year old mead notebook so I don’t know who said what between the two: All and Sebastian.

I really liked the song “Don’t lose my time”, it sounds very authentic to older Italo Disco and it actually reminded me of the classic “How old are you?” by Miko Mission. Is this genre what you want to pursue?

Italo is our main influence. Our musical intentions are to keep writing songs like it but to stay free to change.

Short List of the Week

I heard Boody B from Palms out Sound drop this a few months ago at a tiny but banging bar night. I was blown away at the time, one of the best epic, hard anthems. The AC Slater original gets the appropriate treatment by Jack Beats.
Jack Got Jacked- AC Slater (Jack Beats Remix)

Surkin has a tendency to spastically fly off into high notes, crazy synth like a Kissy Sell Out keyboard solo. I love it! Fortunately for those unconvinced, Bobmo adds some needed dance floor stability.
Kid Gloves- Surkin (Bobmo Remix)

Not a new song by any stretch but one more amazing remix to keep this a classic. “Of course I love music. This is sick.”
This is Sick- Solid Groove (Yeah Woho! Remix)

And of course some memorabilia of the Fuck Bad Music DJ’s killing it at the Tube tonight. The last few days have been fun.

Rave Cave

Rave Cave

Fubar and friends are throwing a late 90’s throwback night, to give old ravers like myself some nostalgia and an excuse to bring out my old neon and put away my black hoodies for an evening.  Ah, the 90’s, when I would venture forth to the rotting core of Detroit in search of condemned warehouses where 1000’s of suburban white kids swarmed in masses of acid glory.  Times have changed, and I’m glad there are plenty of established club nights which feature the music I was so excited about back then, but it certainly takes some of the adventure out of it, knowing you can always rely on the 3rd friday of the month @ Branx to hear some grimmy electro beats. (hint hint! plug plug!)

So here’s my top 10, in no particular order, of my favorite anthems from those days, in high 320kbps bitrate format (would you expect less from fuckbadmusic?).  And those dj’s better put them in the mix, or so help me TECHNOVIKING, the God of Rave will fly in from the Norse Lands with his bloody glow stick knumbchucks and show those dj’s a thing or two.

Fuck Bad Music’s Third Party

All this week we have been showcasing a slew of party flyers, advice on where to go and enough dance nights to boggle the mind. The Portland club scene is changing a bit and it seems for the better. Here is one more party to make it too, all of the writer and friends of FBM coming out for local DJ’s spinning a free show under Kill the Noise!
