Last month I got really really tired of all the mediocre bands on Myspace who tried to solicit themselves to me, despite not having even the remotest similarities in mutual tastes. In hopes to have some fun, deflect the spammiest of friend requests, and encourage bands to not waste my time — and really consider whether or not I would be interested — I announced on FBM and my own Myspace that I would be reviewing the songs and profiles of any Myspace Music page that I got a ‘friend request’ from.
A Severe Reaction is the first band since I wrote about the idea to pop up in my inbox. I was sort of pleased at how the content of A Severe Reaction’s page seemed it would lend itself to my ‘Stop Requesting Me’ campaign. They have a one posted song, “FuckinMove,” a logo, and band photos ’shopped to fly the neons de rigueur for current hip things.

After listening to “FuckinMove” I was pretty thankful it was the only song I had to listen to. It’s distorted power chords over a standard industrial-house beat. The song is reminicent of KMFDM, Powerman 5000, and Marilyn Manson. This is pretty much stuff I really don’t like, which is why I’m doing this column.
If you can stand the rave-rock, there are a few little gems for you in “FuckinMove.” First, the degree to which the main guitar hook resembles that one Zombie Nation song is pretty funny. Second, the way the synth, guitar and vocal melodies unintentionally work outright against each other is almost endearing. I mean, if I love rock-savants like the Sleepers‘ Ricky Williams for when he does it, then I shouldn’t judge ASR too harshly. However, I feel the difference between punk bands and ASR is that most punk bands aren’t trying to pose up thier unpolished core with polished myspace pages and logos.
