These kids met me at the DJ Kue show we had a week ago. Very culture 2.0, this is music created by and for the Girl Talk/American Apparel generation. A new found world where synth and dirty south wear the same sneakers and everyone can access all the music in the world with a few clicks and some bit torrents.
The first show I want to highlight in this years MusicFest NW is unfortunately at Dante’s, and unfortunately the same night as Nico Muhly’s last scheduled Portland performance: Friday September 5th.
The first time I saw These Arms Are Snakes was over 5 years ago, on June 28th, 2003. They played the now defunct Nocturnal (my all time favorite venue) and although I was there to see The Blood Brothers and Minus The Bear, I was pleasantly surprised by TAAS. Singer Steve Snere sang with the microphone entirely in his mouth, intensifying his screams with the synth he leaned on the entire time. Read the rest of this entry »
I should eat something. Or take a shower, or practice for my friends b-day party I am playing tonight.
But this song is phenomenal and I had to share my morning soundtrack. Wiley- Summertime (Crookers Remix)
Wiley first got big with “Wearing my Rolex” which was nice and bouncy in a cheeky sort of way. It also got remixed by everyone eager. This song should be no different though I expect this to be the best of the remixes to come as The Crookers are the most dependable thing in the genre.
The daft punk sample feels so fresh as if it had been written yesterday just for this song to use..
Starting today, and throughout the week I’ll be posting to the calendar shows you should probably be going to that correspond to this years MusicFestNW, along with MP3’s so you can preview the artists before the shows. At $50 for 4 days, there is no good reason not to make it out.
After the jump check out the list of performers as well as how to get into Ratatat, Les Savy Fav, Britt Daniel, No Age, Built To Spill and Battles free of charge.
These are all the crown jewels of the lumbering blog house machine and the reasons for their popularity rest on how often we find ourselves listening to these songs over and over again..
I must also mention that until recently I was a hater on Drums of Death and the flash of hype but this song won me over..
The man was a pioneer in the second wave of Detroit techno and went on to record under half a dozen alias, tour twenty five countries a year and generally be the most respected name in minimal and intelligent beats.
It’s a rare and impressive experience for sleepy little Portland Oregon.
This is what I was doing. I will be back on the blog circuit tomorrow with event review from the DJ Kue show, new songs and maybe who we will be booking next.. Read the rest of this entry »
Lazer Sword dropped a hot new mix titled “Blap to the Future” on their myspace page blog yesterday. These boys keep dropping doper and doper stuff. This megamix is no exception, and is kinda blowing my mind.
The mix is best described in their own words:
“YOUR BOYS LL AND LANDO HAVE BEEN MISSING SLEEP ALL WEEK FOR THIS. WE KNOW WE’VE BEEN PROMISING THAT EP FOR A HOT MINUTE, BUT JUST TO HOLD ERRYBODY OVER UNTIL THAT HITS WE WENT AND RECORDED THE UBER MIX! 18 UNRELEASED REMIXES AND EDITS JUST FOR YOU.. EXCLUSIVE HEAT!!!!!
I am throwing the party tonight and then taking a break. Leaving town for three days to pursue white water rafting, drinking and some gambling.
I’m excited as hell about tonight and tomorrow. Here is a mega post to hold you over. Songs, downloads and when I get back full commentary and event review.
Bloc Party releases a new album which is not terribly exciting after the terrific flop of Weekend in the City but we do have two banging remixes of the first single, Mercury. The whole album is billed as more experimental and electronic and was released digitally on Thursday. This came unexpectedly and in fear of leaks and piracy. The hard copy drops in October. It’s also supposed to be celestial in theme which is pretty fucking random. Bloc Party- Mercury (Flosstradamus Remix) Bloc Party- Mercury (Hervé Is In Disarray Remix)
A new DJ Sega joint of the classic Basement Jaxx track which is pretty hot as Diplo’s Protégé is one of the names to watch this fall. And he is only twenty years old. DJ Sega- Where’s ur head at?
Also a new Crystal Castles remix which musically is dependable, a little more trance like this time around with the floaty-ness nicely offset by a nice driving pattern of high drum beats. White Lies- Death (Crystal Castle Remix)
No I don’t mean Iran or Russia. Politically I would rather we kept our troops at home and rebuild our own world. But on the musical front it’s hard not to write about LGTW…
After doing a quick tour with M.I.A. and having the electro crunk anthem in “Life We Live” remixed by I-turn-everything-to-gold DJ Barletta LGTW is poised to pursue what this all means and turn a flash in the pan success into a career? Or at least become a name a little more well know.
“The Whole City’s Got a Cold” goes to the same territory as N.E.R.D.’s “Everyone Nose” but it goes a bit deeper with the beat, a slowed down ghetto bass line, hand claps and more interesting storytelling about skiing in July. “No one dances no more, they just sniff and sniff.” Life we live is the club banger, another song about “heavy glamour, flashbulbs and young rockstars” but with more excitement and living in the moment euphoria then most. Push up your lighter goes more crunk/pop rasta with another slowed down grinder of a beat.
(Gluttony by Bryan Crockett, 2002. Cultured marble.)
I love it when I spend my work weekend (mostly) away from the internet, and come back to find a damn GLUT of exciting news and new music. YACHT+DFA=!, a new TV on the Radio song, a new Crystal Castles song, more talk about Girl Talk, a free mixtape from Dead Science, and free Music Fest NW wristbands after the jump.
Bad Decision is composed of two electro/house DJ’s from NYC who have played with the likes of Bonde Do Role, Hot Pink Delorean, Yuksek and Apparat. Thanks to my friend Joee Irwin Gavin contacted me about playing a quick set at our opening party on Saturday, since he happened to be in town.
Im honored!
You don’t normally watch embedded video’s on blogs. Too much of a time investment, what if you don’t like it and wast four minutes of your day? And I can’t blame you, I hardly ever do either. So when I click that little button it better be good. And I better be impressed.
Regardless of what you think of the song (I will write about this when the remixes start coming out) the video is amazing. Artistic integrity for something that sounds like Linkin Park meets The Beastie Boys with a nifty beat. What is the world coming to?
Junior Sanchez FT. Hollywood Holt- Beat Drop Hollywood Holt- Caked Up (Black Holes remix)
Where did this guy come from? In some strange mood I love this music though I find it a little too close to the barometer of the tube on a Tuesday night. I liked the hipsters better when they were quiet and dressed nicely, now it’s like American Apparel hanging out on Laguna Beach- very popular. Femme-Crimes Because Of Late Calls (BSBTRGDCLUB Remix)
This song keeps ending up on my playlists and it always seems to be playing on those play lists, very moody/manic and of the stuttering sort. The soon to be popular BSBTRGDCLUB lets the vocal stab of the original stay but only in the simplest of states and the results are almost haunting. Amazing what a bunch of melodic noise will do to ten seconds of vocals. Read the rest of this entry »
As you may have noticed, Nico Muhly’s new album Mothertongue has had me very excited for his show here. Well, that show was last Friday and it was above and beyond my expectations. Read the rest of this entry »
If you haven’t already heard 9th Wonder’s work on Jean Grae’s debut Jeanius, or his work on Jay Z’s The Black Album… well then what the hell is wrong with you?
Today, you are out of excuses. 9th wonder has teamed up with Busy-P collaborator Murs to release Murs & 9th Wonder present: Sweet Lord. They currently have it up for download at their website, and it is pretty fucking fresh and very fucking free.
I occasionally DJ under the moniker “DJ Countzero” and occasionally my moniker half makes mixes for general public consumption. It has been a while in coming for this installment with most of my time lately being devoted to throwing a party rather then playing one. Come see me play at FUBAR the night before our party.
Track list after the jump jump.
Prior to their set at the always smokey Situations, I spent some time in a tour van talking to Jordan Billie and Devin Welch of Past Lives about everything from the demise of The Blood Brothers (and the difference between projects) to the absurdity of pop music & Lil’ Wayne.
FBM is a blog written about all kinds of music. We often focus on small acts and DJs, promoting and loving what we consider to be the very best in Indy, Dubstep, House and far beyond. We are a collective of (currently) unpaid kids based out of Portland Oregon. We urge you to support this music and hence we will provide the the most accurate show listings and heads up on things to do in Portland.
This is all those things but more then anything else this is about community, about having as many authors contributing as much as possible and promoting all of our friends. I believe in politics as still being important and I believe in this generation still being relevant. Our culture is all we have.
Almost all of this music is sent to us by the creator and is entirely legal to download, if something slips through the cracks and you are the owner of a soundfile you wish removed, simply email us. Thank you.
