Dead Prez

Recently at work I put on Dead Prez on my co-workers ipod while he was taking a smoke break. When he returned to the kitchen he joked that I had put on the only racist thing on his player. I paused the music and just stared at him and watched the absolute silence unfold for a full minute. It was only later that I explained that racism is the combination of prejudice and power over another and that a reaction to years of violence and extreme racism by making black power hip-hop does not denote racism, it may be prejudice but there is no power held over us, no violence directed at us, two middle class line cooks in Portland Oregon. It is a reaction to a world that crosses the street when they see a black man, a world where a person of color is treated differently every day when they walk into a Whole Foods or Plaid Pantry.

OH PLEASE. THEYRE NOT RACISTS BUT I AM AGAINST VIOLENCE DIRECTED AT PIZZA DELIVERY BOYS.

Yeah the music video that came out for that song was a bit hard to defend as it showed them holding up a white family in their minivan and taping the whole thing on their tourist camcorder.

They also went off against Lesbians and Gays in one interview so i can’t defend all their actions.

But overall the message is good…

Type your comment here.Wow, somebody actually remembered that little mashup I made years ago using the most primitive of audio tools available. Here is a direct link from my website so you don’t have to go through mediashare:

Wonderful succinct post by the way on why there’s no such thing as “reverse racism.” I hope that your articulation had some effect.

I will have to say, I much prefer the ghetto tech version remixed by flufftronix. It preserves the best part of the song, which is that deep low distinctive bass line.

I dropped this track at a warehouse party last weekend, but it didn’t seem to do the trick, people seemed mighty confused and there was good 30 seconds before anybody resumed dancing. Perhaps that’s because I didn’t have the high quality MP3 yet, and was playing the lower quality128kbps version. I highly recommend purchasing the better quality one, for better amplified sound.
