If you scroll down, you will see that a few days ago I made mention of White Fang’s basketball party/ Poetry Reading/ All around good time. I’m really really excited about that, but since that STARTS AT SEVEN, one can assume it might be done by 9:30.
If in fact this is true, a person can keep the party alive by racing to Rontoms, where old friend and amazing songwriter Alan Singley will be doing a solo set. I haven’t seen Alan preform since he played in my living room, and although I know i can skip it because Alan Singley will never ever stop making music, it would be foolish to miss a show that is so good, and absolutely free. Recently at work I put on Dead Prez on my co-workers ipod while he was taking a smoke break. When he returned to the kitchen he joked that I had put on the only racist thing on his player. I paused the music and just stared at him and watched the absolute silence unfold for a full minute. It was only later that I explained that racism is the combination of prejudice and power over another and that a reaction to years of violence and extreme racism by making black power hip-hop does not denote racism, it may be prejudice but there is no power held over us, no violence directed at us, two middle class line cooks in Portland Oregon. It is a reaction to a world that crosses the street when they see a black man, a world where a person of color is treated differently every day when they walk into a Whole Foods or Plaid Pantry. Dead Prez- Bigger then Hiphop (DJ Koolaid Remix) Dead Prez- Pimp the System (DJ Gray Remix)
Not much talk about the new Ratatat album, most likely because everyone and there mother with a blog is busy building the complete Fake Blood remix set or posting ironic pictures next to Busy P’s new single. I want to get back to that lifestyle as soon as possible but for now, here is a take on a full album.
Review, tracks and downloads after the jump. Read the rest of this entry »
White Fang (my very favorite guys in Portland) are going to be playing a show at Brooklyn Park Basketball Court this Sunday the 29th… I think around 8 or 9:00PM. Though the line-up fluctuates from show to show, this show very well could include all 50000000 members. If you haven’t seen WHT FNG live before, you should probably get on that this Sunday.
Stay tuned for a billion word article on how much I love everything about this band.
if you have trouble finding this park, call (503)-680-3860. I don’t know who’s # that is, but I promise they will help you get there.
There are a few great events I am still hoping to attend before they dry up into horrible candy coated yuppie funded nonsense. And sadly, most examples of large cultural phenomenon end that way, lubed by money and greed, becoming just a tool rather then genuine expression. Lets end the long winded metaphor heavies by just saying that I would love to go to:
Burning Man
Fullmoon Party- Ko Phangan Thailand
Gatecrasher
Somehow I just keep staying in Portland so being able to read Pelski’s great coverage of the Gatecrasher party that just happened to feature The Prodigy, Crookers, Digitalism, Justice, SMD, Chemical Brothers, Soulwax etc. etc. will have to suffice.
If you’ve ever met me ever, even in passing, you probably know that this girl loves to boogie. I am so very excited about this shiny new dance party that Eric Pipedream informed me about. You best believe I’ll be there, not only with bells, but with my dancin shoes on.
Eric says:
THIS FRIDAY, JUNE 27TH AT BRANX:
There is a new dance night in town, and it’s called FUBAR. It’s all about art, electro, and getting fubar’d. If you don’t know what FUBAR means, look it up- or just come to our night and see for yourself. Read the rest of this entry »
Been a while, so this one’s got a lot. OTP, claiming land for Espana, Tube, Rose Festival Carnival, old people, various animals, Oregon coast, zombies, Sasha’s mom, busted pics from Palms Out, etc. etc.
As promised I came up with Seven songs to post one each day, allowing you an evening and the next day to ponder and appreciate the track. As expected I didn’t commit, for that I am sorry. If it is any conselation I have a pretty good excuse (I moved and cancelled my internet).
Bigger better things can be written about, however, and one of those is an event quite a ways in the future that I can’t seem to get off of my mind. Nico Muhly, who was featured in one of the aformentioned song of the day series, (Before the ordeal) is going to be playing a show with Antony & the Johnsons at Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall on September 5th. This is going to be more beautiful (and in turn more worth it) than Sigur Ros’ set in the same month. This is officially what you should spend your money on in early September. Nico Muhly is also playing on the 15th of August with Sam Amidon at the Aladdin Theater, making that what you should spend your money on in mid August! In all seriousness, I’m going to work my ass off to get an interview with Muhly at one of these dates, and if that doesn’t already interest you… study up.
I remember standing in the rave tent (duh) at Coachella last year. I was having fun but distinctly tired, a smidgen heat stroked, hung over and truthfully a little music’ed-out. I was not even sure who I was seeing until I kept over hearing these two giant Australian men talk about how they were about to see their favorite band, Soulwax. They were over two hundred pounds, mostly naked and covered in mud with giant tattoo’s peeking through of rattlesnakes, bunnies and hieroglyphics. They were also almost in tears of joy at the prospect of seeing this band, jumping up and hugging each other, handing me a joint almost as a second thought, I had to get their attention to give it back.
Soulwax played the remixesof their album live and I was floored, found my favorite music festival moment and fully embraced the rock band side project of two of the greatest DJ’s in the world; 2 Many Dj’s.
This duo has been down for many many years and went all “Girl Talk” years before anyone even put the word Mash and Up together. Now they are about to release a big budget movie documenting the life of touring every continent to sold out shows and having the biggest pop artists in the world cueing up to be remixed by the two DJ superstars.
My dear friend Audrina has informed me that our own Urban Outfitters is hosting a local artists showcase this Sunday.
Audrina says, “We will provide booths while the artists get to display and gain 100 percent profit from their crafts. There will everything from paintings to tshirts to jewelry. All handmade. All amazing.”
Put aside the post-hipster pretension that keeps you from being seen inside an Urban Outfitters and support semi-starving Portland artists. Buy some clothes. Decorate your walls. Checkitout!
My good friend and frequent photographer of FBM events has started his own blogspot to showcase his work. Hands down one of the best talents in the Rose City with the whole world ahead of him; IE we are young, the best is still yet to come.
You can buy the new Girl Talk album for as much or as little as you want. What a deal! And we have an exclusive interview with the man himself next month. Girl Talk- Feed The Animals
Often times when there are more than one lead vocalist it is easy for one to shine above the other, which can make a person question why they are a band rather than just a solo act. Isobel Campbell And Mark Lanegan are a duo that consistently work together to create songs that just wouldn’t work one without the other.
I don’t usually report old news. I normally prefer the fancy flash of brand new material and I seek artistic songs (or gasp, a whole album!) to be the medium that I share with the world. Unless a DJ mix is really spectacular it quickly fades to background noise as a beautiful thing, but a thing best appreciated live.
There is so much new music, so many new artists and such good information flow that blogs usually just push the newest tracks to build mixes out of rather then the finished product.
This mix is the exception and it says paragraphs about the staying power of the emerging fidget house.
Foamo is joining The Crookers, Fake Blood and Herve as a leader of the pack..
One thing that I love about instrumental music is that they can’t cop-out by using lyrics for song titles. The Advisory Circle are the kind of band that takes advantage of this by depicting a feeling in their song titles that serves as a guide for how to listen.
For better or worse (better for now) I am starting to get about an email a day from record companies, PR groups and up and coming bands, all trying to promote their brand new album, their brand new sound and the brand new genre for all the young music fans to embrace and find identity with.
Rob over at End Hits sent me a link to a new band called Cloetta Paris from Sweden. Here is a track called “Secret Eyes” and my take on it.
FBM is a blog written about all kinds of music. We often focus on small acts and DJs, promoting and loving what we consider to be the very best in Indy, Dubstep, House and far beyond. We are a collective of (currently) unpaid kids based out of Portland Oregon. We urge you to support this music and hence we will provide the the most accurate show listings and heads up on things to do in Portland.
This is all those things but more then anything else this is about community, about having as many authors contributing as much as possible and promoting all of our friends. I believe in politics as still being important and I believe in this generation still being relevant. Our culture is all we have.
Almost all of this music is sent to us by the creator and is entirely legal to download, if something slips through the cracks and you are the owner of a soundfile you wish removed, simply email us. Thank you.
